Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This lavish retelling of the classic Agatha Christie novel ticks all the requisite whodunnit boxes, despite the distraction of director Kenneth Branagh's extraordinary Hercule Poirot moustache. A disparate group of passengers (including Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Penélope Cruz, Derek Jacobi, Olivia Colman, Josh Gad and Daisy Ridley) fall under suspicion when the titular train gets stuck in the snow and one of their number meets a grisly demise, leaving the famed Belgian detective with an intriguing puzzle to solve. Branagh's Poirot fares better in the dramatic scenes than the light comedy ones, while Gad's assistant and Ridley's governess impress most among the big-name suspects. The film is a feast to look at, from the interiors of the train to the chocolate-box beauty of the exteriors, and is a strong enough addition to the cinematic Christie canon to suggest the start of a new-look franchise.
